Orphans

“We have become orphans, fatherless…” Lamentations 5:3

If we do not know God as our Heavenly Father, can we say we are fatherless? Another way I form this question in my mind is what “sonship” is eternal? Could it be that much of what we are seeing in our world today comes from an orphan like mindset? An adopted child has a family, relationship and a home. They do nothing to be adopted, only accept the invitation. All are invited, so why do some remain as orphans? Perhaps it is because we do not have a true understanding of grace. Makes me wonder if believers began to live more gracious, would more orphans come home?

Determined

“Now Ezra had determined in his heart to study the law of the LORD, obey it, and teach its statues and ordinances in Israel.” Ezra 7:10

When we study the book of Ezra, we gain insight that can serve us today. This man determined in his heart and took action. Since we cannot give what we do not have, Ezra had to study the scriptures in order to have something to obey and teach. He gives us an incredible example of leadership. For what we determine to spend our time studying, getting to know the One who loves us unconditionally, will effect everything. And we see later in this chapter, the king acknowledges Ezra’s wisdom given by God and was shown favor. His courage was strengthened and he led a very important trip back to Jerusalem, back to the temple. His determination to act blessed many.

I wonder what would happen if we became more determined to study the scriptures, obey them and teach anyone the Lord gives us? Who could we lead or plant seeds, that will eventually lead to them coming to know the Lord? We can begin with asking the Lord to give us a desire to study, obey and share. It takes a bit of discipline in the beginning, but we have no idea what the outcome will be. And that sounds pretty exciting!
